Excerpts from MOONLIT WALK HOME:
Two works-in-process readings of a new operatic music-theater piece adapted from the poetry of Fern Green Baldwin, mother of eight, wife, artist, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her writings offering a singular perspective on rural America, industrial transformation, and migration, an expression and a chronicle of a lifetime articulated from a Minnesotan "sense of place" and a wonder of invisible things. Now, her daughters JENNIFER BALDWIN PEDEN and CHRISTINA BALDWIN join composer DANIEL NASS and director/dramaturg BEN KRYWOSZ to create an operatic meditation for the theater, adapting Fern's writing into moments that sing, giving voice to a spirit that describes, remembers, celebrates, laments, and forecasts a life of quiet substance.

This video presents two excerpts, "October Snow" (beginning of video) and Visitations" (starting at 5:30), recorded for our virtual ROUGH CUTS series. Descriptions follow, and lyrics are included in the comment section. "October Snow" (music by Daniel Nass, lyrics by Ben Krywosz after Fern Green Baldwin) is a meditation on the seasons, one of the recurring motifs in the book. In adapting Fern’s writing for the stage, we took two of her pieces, using one as an opening recitative, and the other as an aria. She ponders the late autumn weather that anticipates winter. And indeed, the next morning, she is surprised by a rare early snow, reminding her that we will become “winter people” soon. This video features vocalist Jennifer Baldwin Peden and pianist Sonja Thompson. "Visitations" (music by Daniel Nass, lyrics by Ben Krywosz after Fern Green Baldwin) explores Fern’s experience of what we all know, on some level, as “the other world”, the spiritual energies that are part of the mysteries of life. Her visceral encounter with an unknown apparition leads into the children’s song and grown-up’s story about Bowdy, the family’s little Scottie terrier.

This video features vocalists Christina Baldwin and Jennifer Baldwin Peden, with pianist Sonja Thompson.

Both videos were recorded and edited by Lucas Wells.
