Commissioned for the Royal Shakespeare Co. and first performed in 1989, It is a feminist retelling of the Greek myth of the rape of Philomela. In 2007 it was adapted into an opera of the same name. Timberlake Wertenbaker's adaptation tells of the dangers that come from silence, both chosen and forced, as well as dangers that come from making someone into an “other.”
