Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad
The picART World Peace Mural

Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad 50th Year Celebration, June 15, 2002

In the spirit of KIDS' GUERNICA , picART's class of 10 - 12 year old children in Carlsbad explored the theme of PEACE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY as the subject matter for art education and cross-cultural understanding. After the children worked in small groups to create designs and concepts, our teaching staff merged their ideas into one design incorporating several concepts. The kids voted on the final design and on any changes. They approached the project with a great deal of enthusiasm, intelligence, compassion, and loyalty.

picART is an art education / youth development program offered in formal collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad and San Dieguito. picART stands for Partners in Compassion Art Programs. Specially trained professional artists teach a variety of fine arts in Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and at Casa de Amparo in San Luis Rey.

The mural won the top awards at the California State Fair, and has been on display at the World Beat Center in San Diego and the Kroc Center for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego. We have offered it to the Mayor of New York City for events commemorating September 11.
